Virginia Scoville

November 8, 1927 — July 27, 2021

Centennial

Virginia (Harris) Scoville passed away July 27, 2021 in hospice care surrounded by her husband and children in Centennial CO.  She was born November 8, 1927 in Hopkins, MO to Lela and Marlin Harris, and raised in Denver CO.  Virginia worked at her mother’s coffee shop whenever possible.  She graduated from Denver North High School in 1945, and graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1950, with a degree in English and History. Virginia taught high school English and History at Denver West High School.

Virginia belonged to the Calico and Boots Square Dance Club.  In 1952, Virginia and Wilber Scoville met during a square dance at Greeley and married in Denver in 1953. They lived in Camp Breckenridge KY, Bridgeport NE, Denver CO, and Minot ND before moving to Oshkosh WI in 1962.

Virginia enjoyed gardening, sewing, camping, backpacking, and cooking. She was dedicated to many community organizations including: Job’s Daughters, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, American Association of University Women (AAUW), Faculty Dames, Alpha Xi Delta, PTA, and Gourmet Club.  She earned her master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1971, and worked in the Oshkosh Public School District for several years as a substitute teacher and at UW-Oshkosh as a counselor.  After their children graduated from Oshkosh North High School, Virginia and Wilber resumed their shared passion for dancing, and joined several local polka and square dance organizations. Virginia designed and sewed most of the square dance and polka outfits for herself and Wilber.

Following Wilber’s retirement, they traveled extensively and wintered in Mexico, Texas, and Arizona.   In 2013, Virginia and Wilber moved to Holly Creek Retirement Community in Centennial CO.  There, Virginia joined the Holly Creek book club, and had many friends.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Wilber Scoville, and her three children: Linda (Nathaniel) Tetrick – Cincinnati OH, Warren (Bunny Hollebeke) Scoville – Centennial CO, and Shirley (Paul, deceased) Stephan – Madison WI; by her five grandchildren: James Scoville (Gillian), Caroline Tetrick, Andrew Tetrick, Katerina Stephan, and Karl Stephan; and three great grandchildren: Isabella and Adrian Scoville, and Traye Scoville.

She will be forever missed by her family, friends, and the people whose lives she touched.
