It is with heavy hearts but immense gratitude for the time we had, that we announce that Richard James Birkmann of Walsenburg, CO passed away on April 23, 2026 at the age of 79. 

Born in Lincoln, NE on April 8, 1947, Rich was a kind man who left an impression on everyone he met. The beloved husband, father, and grandfather had a warm smile and gentle demeanor that made people feel welcome and accepted. 

Rich, also known as Birkie, was an avid Colorado sports fan. He loved the Colorado Avalanche, the Rockies, the Denver Broncos, and was a longtime, loyal fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers (no matter how bad they got!). He enjoyed fishing, golfing, being in his yard, being around friends and family, and a nice glass of scotch at sunset. 

Rich is survived by Donna, his wife of 24 years; his daughter Stephanie and her husband Mike; his son Brandon and his son Ryan; and his step-children: Leigh, Dave and his wife Ana, and their son, Max. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Savilla Birkmann and his brother Steven Birkmann. 

There will be a memorial June 13 in Walsenburg, CO at his and Donna’s home.
