Michael David Stammel

August 29, 1966 — February 3, 2024

Aurora, Colorado

Michael David Stammel, 57, left this world behind on February 3, 2024, surrounded by family. Born with cerebral palsy, Mike never walked, ran, cycled, or drove a car. But none of that bothered him. In a life challenged by physical and mental limitations, Mike rolled through with grace, charm, unrivaled optimism, and a million-dollar smile.

To the chagrin of his brothers, Mike became a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan during his formative years in Topeka, Kansas, where he attended the Capper Foundation. Even in his later years, Mike fondly recalled memories and friends from Capper.

After graduating from Capper, with the help from his loving parents, Mike relocated to an assisted living facility in Greeley, Colorado, which would be his home for 30 years. Mike cherished the social interaction with the other residents and aides in the courtyard of his apartment complex, where he diligently tended to his beloved tomato plants and pumpkin vines. In Greeley, he worked a number of interesting jobs, including dismantling old television sets and working in a second-hand store.

He was the proud host of many family gatherings centered around the Greeley Independence Day Parade. Mike was an ardent Rockies fan and enjoyed watching the Broncos as well, so long as they weren’t playing the Chiefs. Over the years, he had many hot sports opinions, starting with “they need to fire Dan Reeves” and so on through to Sean Payton. Mike rarely lost at Yahtzee, loved to do puzzles, and was a big fan of any kind of home improvement show.

Mike moved from Greeley to Aurora two years ago, where he lived in a host home. A recent trip to California was a highlight for Mike. Mike will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Mike and his family benefitted greatly and are so thankful for the love and support of truly countless individuals who dedicate their lives to helping those with disabilities. He is survived by his mom and dad, Jill and Ed Stammel, and his brothers and sister, Ed, Matt, and Julie, along with their families. In place of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Capper Foundation (www.capper.org) or a charity of your choice.

A funeral will be held at 10 am on Friday, February 23rd at Our Father Lutheran Church located at 6335 S Holly Street, Centennial, Colorado.  Reception to follow at the church.
