It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Mary Elizabeth Joyce who passed away on February 23, 2023. She was 71 years old. Mary was a devoted mother, proud grandmother and closely touched the lives of many who called her friend.
Mary was born on October 28, 1951 to Thomas and Helen Joyce. She grew up in Watertown, MA with her four siblings and was graduate of Watertown High School. In 1986, Mary bravely decided to move across the country with her one-year-old daughter to begin the most defining and rewarding chapter of her life in Aurora, Colorado. It was there that she raised Meghan and built a strong community that became her family out west. Despite living in Colorado for the past 37 years, her Boston accent and pride remained strong. You can take the girl out of Boston, but you can’t take Boston out of the girl.
Mary will be remembered for her courage, resiliency, and determination to create a beautiful life for she and her daughter in Colorado. Mary worked for King Soopers as a checker for 23 years where she formed deep connections with many of her customers and colleagues and was known for her hard work ethic. She worked tirelessly and sacrificially to ensure Meghan had everything she needed to be successful in school, sports, and life. Mary had a spirit for adventure and loved exploring new places in Colorado and taking cross-country road trips to visit friends throughout the U.S. She enjoyed hiking and camping in the mountains of Colorado specifically at lake Granby, Steamboat Lake, and Crested Butte. She was so happy to share many of these places with her family back east when they visited, creating life long memories in the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.
If you knew Mary, you know that her daughter Meghan was her most treasured blessing and gave her the greatest sense of joy, pride, and purpose. These feelings were only magnified in August of 2019 when Matt officially joined the family, and in January of 2022 with the birth of her granddaughter, Emma Elizabeth both of whom she loved and adored so deeply.
Mary is survived by her only daughter Meghan Rozwod, son-in-law Matthew Rozwod, and her granddaughter Emma Elizabeth Rozwod, her namesake. She recently got to celebrate Emma’s first birthday one month prior to her passing. She is also survived by her two sisters Ellen Joyce (Ron Marstin) of Louisville, KY and Patricia (Robert) Connors of Waltham, MA as well as her sister-in-law Frances Joyce (Edward Joyce) of Framingham, MA. Mary loved her family fiercely and was so very proud of her nieces and nephews, their spouses, their children and their respective (and numerous) accomplishments. Mary is predeceased by her mother Helen Kelly Joyce, her father Thomas Francis Joyce, her brother Edward Joyce, and her sister Kathleen Joyce.
Celebration of Life memorial will be held Friday May 5th at 11:00AM at Trinity Baptist Church 15555 E Quincy Ave, Aurora, CO 80015. Reception with food and refreshments to immediately follow as we share stories and memories of Mary. Her family will be participating in the Furry Scurry supporting the Denver Dumb Friends League on Saturday May 6th at Washington Park in Denver, CO in her honor.
