Celebration of Life and Legacy
Edith Gatewood, aged 81, of Denver, CO, peacefully passed away the evening of May 9, 2026 in her room at Allison Care Center.
Born on November 7, 1944, in Fresno, CA, daughter of Harry and Vera Gatewood and sister to Delbert, Robert, Ray and Kathy and sister in Jesus Christ to many. From a young age, she learned to work hard in tough conditions as her family traveled as migrant farm workers until 1955 when they settled in Newbert, OR. Here, Edith attended Edwards Elementary School and graduated from Newberg High School. After graduation, she headed to the east coast and joined some carnivals, recently telling her brother Bob that it was the happiest time of her life. Never satisfied with the ordinary, Edith spent several years as a missionary teaching English in mainland China, where she smuggled in Bibles and had a tremendous impact on everyone she met.
Pastor Craig Hill (globally recognized speaker, and founder of Family Foundations International) mentioned Edith was a very amazing woman, one of the most diligent and perseverant people he’s ever met. In the 1990s she was an integral part of The Harvest Ministries, and supported Family Foundations International till her last day. Edith was never static but was always studying and working to bless others and bring the gospel of Jesus to those who didn’t know Him.
Edith has the following educational accolades:
She was a devout member of Colorado Church the past decade, and recently told Lead Pastor Evan Martin, “This is where my heart is.” Edith was committed to attending church every Sunday to run her tea station. She would take several buses to church (in each of its various locations in the past several years), sometimes trudging her walker across Wadsworth through heavy snow in her big boots, Bronco’s coat, scarf and gloves! People offered her rides, but she said no most of the time as “it was too far for anyone to take her.” She was perfectly fine without help, though some friends from church occasionally kept her company at the bus stop after service.
Edith was faithful, and special in her very own way. She wanted to serve, and she did so with diligence! She was fiercely independent but wasn't afraid to demand help when she needed it. She would acknowledge that she was sassy, but those who spent time with her would also catch glimpses of her kind soul (despite her attempts to hide it). She loved anything sweet, and Pepsi was her absolute favorite. The past year was hard on her, as control of her mind and body slowly slipped away, but she's now home with Jesus and finally in perfect peace.
Edith lived a long, fulfilled life of service, with little and asked very little of others. Her brother Bob says, “I love you Edith, and I know God will reward you due to your faith in him. Rest in peace little sister.”
Her biological and spiritual families wish to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the frontline workers at Denver Metro Village, St Anthony’s Hospital (especially Paws for Patients, ER and 7th floor), Denver Adult Protection Services, CremateSimply and Allison Care Center for their compassionate care during Edith’s final years, months and days with us. She is now at peace in Heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, most likely teaching and blessing others with hot tea.
