Dorothy Wood

October 26, 1919 — October 30, 2012

Dorothy Giles Wood, of Denver, formerly of Thornton, died October 30, 2012 of natural causes at the Argyle Assisted Living Center in Denver. She was 93.

Born in View, Texas on October 26, 1919, Mrs. Wood graduated from San Angelo Texas High School in 1937. After training in St. Louis, she became a certified lab technician at a private hospital in San Angelo, TX during World War II. In 1945 she married Sam A. Wood. The couple moved to Derby, CO and eventually settled in Thornton in 1955, buying one and then another of the first homes built in Hoffman Heights. Their first son, Don, was born in 1949, followed by another son, Ray, in 1953, and a third son, Charles, in 1954.

Although she considered herself a homemaker and mother first, Mrs. Wood actively pursued several interests. She became interested in electronics in the 1970s and after attending classes, received her FCC broadcast station engineers license. Later, she transferred her interest in electronics to computers and purchased a Commodore 64, one of the first personal computers on the market. During the 1980s she volunteered to teach Spanish-speakers English through a program set up by the Thornton Presbyterian Church during the 1980s.

She and her husband shared a love of fishing and camping and spent many vacations camped along various rivers in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. She remained a member of the Thornton Presbyterian Church until her death. She taught Sunday school for several years and was active in Bible study groups, prayer circles, and other church activities.

Dorothy Wood is survived by sons Don Marta, of Wheat Ridge; Ray Linda of Arvada; granddaughters Leora Wood, 35, Jeff Trewyn of Westminster; Lindsey Wood, 30, of Del Ray Beach, Florida; Jennifer Wood, 28, of San Diego; Brittany Wood, 26, of Lakewood; and one great grandchild, Jeffry Giles Trewyn, 5, of Westminster. She was preceded in death by her husband Sam A. Wood of Thornton in 1993 and son Charles in 2004, and her parents, L.D. and Clara Giles of Wichita Falls, Texas.

A memorial service is planned at the Thornton Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 3 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be sent to Susan G. Komen Denver Affiliate, 1835 Franklin St., Denver, CO 80218 or made online at www.komendenver.org
