Carolyn Djernes Toughill

Carolyn passed away July 1, 2022 after very long battle with kidney disease.  She will be laid to rest by her husband in the Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO 80235.

Carolyn Elaine Djernes “DJ” was born to Edgar and Marilyn (Retzlaff) Djernes on June 4, 1952.  She started her journey through life on a farm just outside Marquette, NE, and later moved with her parents to a farm near Archer, NE.

She attended the Central City schools, kindergarten thru graduation. Carolyn was Salutatorian of her class of 1970.  She was so thrilled to attend her 50th reunion, and to renew old friendships. After high school she attended and graduated from University of Nebraska Kearney.

Carolyn then moved to Colorado where she has spent the remainder of her life. While there she met the love of her life and husband of 31 years Michael Edmund Toughill.  They made their home between Vail and Eagle, CO.  Carolyn’s lifelong love of flowers and anything with four feet (especially horses) was easy for anyone who knew her to see and appreciate.

She is preceded in death by her husband and parents.  Among her survivors are one sister Lynette (Mike) Goldberger, a nephew Dory (Virginia) Goldberger, great niece, Kaitlin, and great nephew, Elwood, all from Michigan.  Surviving also are sister-in-laws Tudi Toughill, Laura Logsdon, and Mary Race, of Colorado. Also left to treasure her memory is her special friends Tara and Chris Haymond, Kim and Rick Walter, and their sons, Ben and Nick all from Colorado.  Carolyn has many relatives and friends in Nebraska and Colorado who also remember her warmly.
