Byron Allen Matthews

Byron “Bud” Allen Matthews died on August 13, 2026, at the age of 81. Born in Clinton, Iowa, Bud graduated with honors from the University of Iowa before earning his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career as a tenured professor of Social Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and was the co-founder of an innovative behavioral science software company. Following his academic and entrepreneurial accomplishments, he retired early to New Mexico, where he passionately pursued diverse interests for over three decades. Bud is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Gina; his son, Jim Matthews (Stephanie); his granddaughter, Rebecca Matthews (Daniel); his great-grandson, Alexander Matthews; his sister, Mary Beth Clark (Tom); and his nieces, Leah Clark and Joanna Clark. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
