Al Lawrence Welle was born February 25, 1971, in northwest Iowa, where he and his sisters grew up on their dad's farm. In high school, he was active in large and individual speech, theater, debate, musical productions, football, and wrestling - qualifying for State his senior year.
Al was deeply involved in his local Lutheran churches during his youth and was especially close to all his grandparents and great-grandparents. He spent many meaningful hours with his paternal great-grandfather, Lester Welle, during the final years of Lester’s life. He also shared countless hours with his maternal grandfather, Robert Koppert, the local Boy Scout troop leader. Under his grandfather’s guidance, Al earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Academically, Al excelled. He was a National Merit Finalist and scored just one point shy of a perfect score on his ACTs. He graduated third in his high school class.
He went on to pursue higher education, earning an Associate of Applied Science in Computer Technology – Network Administration from Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), Ankeny, Iowa, in 1999. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science – Software Engineering from Arizona State University (ASU), Tempe, Arizona, in 2007.
It was during his time finishing his degree at DMACC that Al met his future wife, Margaret Ann Scott. Their paths crossed when both were invited by friends to attend DEMICON in the spring of 1999. This meeting led to their marriage on February 17, 2001.
Al and Margaret made their home in Gilbert, Arizona. After converting to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Al continued his lifelong dedication to church service, including working and serving in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Following his graduation from ASU, Al began his professional career at Lockheed Martin.
He was proud of his work and later relocated to Colorado to continue his career. It was there that he passed from this life on October 6, 2025.
Al was preceded in death by his mother, Val (nee Koppert), and his father-in-law, David Scott.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Scott Welle; his father, Don Welle; his sisters, Alace Welle and Liz Simpson (nee Welle); his mother-in-law, Kay Scott; his siblings-in-law, James and Akemi Scott, Beth Scott, Rebecca and Greg Parrott, and Sarah and Bryan Hunt; 27 nieces and nephews; and 11 great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held for Al on Saturday, October 25th at 11 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4195 E Wildcat Reserve Pkwy, Highlands Ranch.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to consider becoming organ donors and/or make a donation to a local cat rescue organization.
